when to use for, since or ago

  • for + period of time: how long something continues
    I have lived here for five years / for a year / for a decade.
  • since + point in time: when something started in the past
    I have lived here since 2015 / since last Friday / since March.
  • ago + period: when something happened in the past measured from the present
    I lived here five years ago / a decade ago.
